About Northstar Survival

Northstar Survival was founded by a dedicated family of survival and medical instructors on Kodiak Island, Alaska in 1984.Years of training and Search and Rescue experience, along with thousands of hours of research and development in the field and frigid waters of Alaska, have brought about a lineup of tried and true products, which have performed in the harshest of climates. Dave Watkins, Northstar’s founder, spent 6 years in the Marines with two Vietnam tours, and retired from the Coast Guard after 14 years flying Search and Rescue on Kodiak Island. The last 6 years of his career was spent as chief instructor at the Coast Guard Air Station Survival School. Dave has spent over 500 hours in the ocean teaching and perfecting maritime products. The maritime weather conditions of the Aleutians are some of the worst in the world, and survival and medical gear had to be tough, reliable, and workable. Our medical bags and the supplies in them were molded and perfected in those years of experience. We now offer those same products that we ourselves relied on in the air, land, and sea in actual lifesaving missions. Our clients have included EMTs, all branches of the armed forces, including Marine Recon and Navy Seal teams , commercial fisherman, law enforcement, as well as the serious and casual recreationalist.
Our name is synonymous with Polaris the Northstar. The only star in the constellation Ursula Major- the big bear, that is constant, unwavering, and reliable. It is literally a directional beacon for the lost. Our logo is the Orca Whale, a symbol of toughness, determination, and strength; a true representation of the will to survive.
